A year after Cynthia’s intense game with her mysterious opponent from behind the Veil, she tries to learn more about her Grandparents, specifically her Grandmother, whom she never had the opportunity to meet.
In her dreams, she continues playing chess with her Grandpa. She asks him different questions about him and Grandma’s lives. He tells Cynthia a little about her when she was pregnant with Cynthia’s mom and about her beautiful garden. He teaches her more chess moves while listening to her curiosity and helping in the few ways he’s able.
After asking her mother similar questions, she learns her parents still own her grandparents’ farm in ‘Old’ Pine Valley.
Cynthia and her mother go on a road trip to where her mother was raised, where she gets to stay in her mother’s untouched room. They head out after the last day of school to make it in time for the small town’s annual festival.
Her Grandfather gives her a small chess piece to protect, as things aren’t always as they seem. A deeper reason may draw her to her mother’s home state, and the piece that needs to be protected may be needed later to return the favor.
